Welcome to the new e-newsletter and website for the Central Asia Regional Information Network (CARIN), a participating member of the GOFC-GOLD network (Global Observation of Forest Cover and Land Use Dynamics).
Our geography centers on Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Mongolia, and we are an informal network of scientists and professionals either located or with scientific interests in Central Asia.
The thematic focus of CARIN includes Land-Cover and Land-Use Change (LCLUC) and its implications for climate & society, human movements, forest function (including disturbances and fires), ecosystem carbon storage and flux dynamics, and water and ecosystems management. Some of the critical regional issues include changes in forest composition, changes in ecological diversity, increasing urbanization, extreme events (i.e., floods, droughts and fires) due to unbalanced water regimes.
Our primary goals:
Provide a platform for collaboration among remote sensing experts in the regions
Build capacity for implementing remote sensing and LCLUC methodologies in the region
Foster regional collaboration for monitoring the dynamics, stability, and vulnerability of major land covers and ecosystems
Promote effective monitoring for sustainable management and preservation, on the local, regional, and pan-Eurasian level
In the coming weeks and months, we look forward to sharing e-newsletters with you. The website will be kept updated with the latest events, news, publications, meetings. Part of that depends on you - we invite you to contribute suggestions for content, be it your latest book or article, a new funding opportunity, or an upcoming event.
We look forward to collaborating with you here - reach us via the Contact page.
Sincerely
Dr. Geoffrey Henebry, Professor of Geography @ Michigan State University / GCCEO
US Coordinator of CARIN
